Reliever opts out of Red Sox contract, could return to Yankees

The New York Yankees were one of the most active teams in the Major Leagues in the hours leading up to the MLB trade deadline. They managed to strengthen the team in several facets of the game that they needed to fight in the postseason.

The Aaron Boone-led team wanted more offensive weight in the middle of the lineup and also a reliever. The Yankees were able to achieve both objectives, but their club could still improve.

A former Yankee is available and it could make sense for the team to bring him back. Lucas Luetge spent two seasons with the Yankees, but he’s been in the Boston Red Sox’s minor league system this year and just opted out of his contract.

Boston Red Sox reliever Lucas Luetge has exercised his buyout option and is a free agent”said journalist Katie Morrison-O’Day. “Luetge was one of the most reliable relievers in Worcester’s bullpen this season: 3.02 ERA in 31 appearances, 6 saves, 10.2 K/9 in 41 2/3 innings.

Luetge is a seven-year major league veteran with a career ERA of 3.60 in 230 appearances. He shined in Triple-A and could now be snapped up by another organization and the Yankees have everything to bring him back.
