Kochi: Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and BP Plc have announced that they have started producing oil and gas from the MJ field. This is the last of three major new deepwater projects completed by the RIL-bp team off India’s east coast. The announcement follows the completion of tests ahead of generating power from the MJ field.
Gas and condensate will initially be produced from the MJ field, following the start-up of R-cluster field production in December 2020 and the satellite cluster in April 2021. All three fields will use the same infrastructure. At peak, the three fields combined will produce about 30 million cubic meters per day (1 billion cubic feet per day) of gas. This accounts for one-third of India’s total gas production. It will meet 15 percent of India’s gas demand.
Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director, Reliance Industries said, “We are delighted to be working with BP on critical projects under the most challenging environments. He added that through these projects, MJ Development will be able to support the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Energy Vision’ schemes of the Indian government.
The MJ field was discovered in 2013, about 30 km off Gadimoga, offshore India’s eastern coast, and sanctioned in 2019. The MJ field is about 1,200 meters below sea level. The MJ is the part of the subsurface that has a lot of gas and condensate. 12 million cubic meters of gas and 25,000 barrels of condensate per day are received from MJ.
