Stable to the finish?
Under new coach Sebastian Hoeneß (40), VfB is still unbeaten after four competitive games. After the 1-1 draw at FC Augsburg, sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth (44) attested to the team’s stability in the relegation battle: “The curve is definitely pointing upwards.”
But what about the competition from VfB? BILD makes the form check in the relegation battle.
FC Augsburg (13th place/30 points): VfB failed to pull FCA back into the relegation loop with a win in Augsburg. With the 1-1 draw, Enrico Maassen’s team (31) has been without a win in six games, but still has a five-point lead over Stuttgart, who are on the relegation zone.
FCA is still a guest at Kellerkind Bochum, Frankfurt and Gladbach and welcomes Union and BVB at home. A win should be enough for the “undescendables” to stay up again.
TSG Hoffenheim (14th place/29 points): After a terrible start with five bankruptcies in five games, ex-VfB coach Pellegrino Matarazzo (45) managed to stabilize the stumbling TSG. Three wins in a row, plus against direct competitors Hertha and Schalke, have given the club some breathing room in the relegation battle.
TSG is saved, visiting Stuttgart on the last day of the game, but not yet. The problem is the lack of consistency. After the point at FC Bayern (1:1), they lost at home against Cologne (1:3).
VfL Bochum (15th place/27 points): Despite the home defeat against VfB (2:3) and the 1:5 debacle against Wolfsburg, VfL has a two-point lead over relegation place 16, which, however, threatens to melt in four games without a win. In the game against Wolfsburg, the team coached by Thomas Letsch (54) had no chance and conceded one slapstick goal after the other.
VfL lives from its strength at home, scoring 19 out of 27 points in its own stadium. Almost nothing goes away (8 points), only Hertha is worse (5).
FC Schalke (17th place/24 points): Halfway through the season, S04 were at the bottom of the table with nine points from 17 games and were already seven points behind the relegation place. The Knappen then started a series of eight games without defeat under Thomas Reis (49), including wins against VfB (2-1) and in Bochum (2-0).
But after the 5-2 win against desolate Berliners, S04 conceded a 0-4 swatter in Freiburg. The rest of the program is tough, including away games in Munich and Leipzig as well as Bayern defeater Mainz. The squad is at the absolute limit, significantly weaker than that of VfB.
Hertha BSC (18th place/22 points): The change of coach at Hertha has already fizzled out again, the team looks dead. At the debut of the new, old coach Pal Dardai (47), Hertha lost 4-2 at home against Bremen and was already 4-0 behind after just under an hour .
The day after the debacle, there was a memo for midfielder Ivan Sunjic (26), whom Dardai sent into the dressing room after an argument with the words “Piss off!” A process that shows how much is wrong with Hertha – both Sporty as well as human Sunday we go to FC Bayern, then the game against VfB is coming up.
