The move abruptly ended Edelman’s 11-season spell with the team. He was notably one of the favorite targets of quarterback Tom Brady, making a historic catch in the 51e Super Bowl and receiving the title of 53rd Most Valuable Playere Super Bowl.
The 34-year-old Edelman also shared a video on his Twitter account in which he announced his retirement from football.
Edelman appeared in just six games last season before making his way to the injured list after undergoing knee surgery. The receiver also missed the entire 2017 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
Edelman would play the final season of a two-year contract worth US $ 15.5 million. He was going to have to fight for a regular job with the Patriots, who recently signed wide receivers and free agents Kendrick Bourne and Nelson Agholor.
A seventh-round pick in the 2009 draft, Edelman won the Super Bowl three times with the Patriots. He’s second in team history in catches (620), fourth in receiving yards (6822) and ninth in touchdowns by air (36).
He will be remembered without a double for his playoff play. He caught 118 balls for gains of 1,422 yards and seven touchdowns.
During the 53e Super Bowl, Edelman had 10 receptions for 141 yards, helping the Patriots defeat the Los Angeles Rams 13-3.
In those playoffs, Edelman tied Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin for the second-highest 100 or more yards in the playoffs with six, two off Jerry Rice’s record.
