Freedom for Pablo González, NOW!
Sunday, May 28, 2023
From CGT We once again demand that the Spanish State not look the other way and demand the release of the Basque journalist Pablo González who today has been detained for 15 months in Polish territory, accused of espionage without any type of evidence.
The reporter, who was covering the war in Ukraine when he was arrested, has seen that, in addition to being deprived of his liberty, there is a clear lack of his basic rights in view of the trial that is going to begin in Poland and of which the journalist’s lawyers are not they know the charges against him in order to prepare his defense.
But even more serious is that the Foreign Minister of the most progressive government in Spain (according to them), Mr. Albares, reliably supports the Polish government and defends the public accusations against Pablo, calling them “serious” and lying to the press when he says that “their fundamental rights are being guaranteed”. This statement is contradicted by Pablo’s own partner in the microphones of Radio Popular-Herri Irratia: «We do not know why or the arguments they have presented, the lawyers have not been notified, I ask Albares to notify us what those charges that he says have been.
As we have expressed on several occasions during these 15 months, from CGT We are aware that freedom of expression and freedom of information are rights that have not yet been conquered in a large part of the planet -including many states considered by the international community as “democratic”-. That these rights are respected is basic to living in a free world. From our organization we will continue to demand both the release of Pablo, as well as the fulfillment of the rights of freedom of expression and freedom of information in Poland, in the Spanish State and in any part of the world, ending the systematic persecution against the people who earn life as reporters and communicators.
You don’t lock up the truth by locking up journalists
