New Delhi: The Supreme Court rejected the review petition filed by Bilkis Banu against the Supreme Court ruling allowing the Gujarat government to review the release of 11 convicts who were sentenced to life in prison for the gang rape of the genocide of Gujarat 2002 murder of family members. It is on the basis of this important May 2022 verdict that the Government of Gujarat formed the committee and took the decision to release the defendants. At the same time, the court is considering the motion against the defendant’s acquittal.
Last August, the Gujarat government released the 11 accused who had been sentenced to life in prison in the Bilkis Banu gang rape case. Following the defendant’s request for clemency, a committee was formed which unanimously decided to release all 11 defendants. The decision to release the accused came after the Supreme Court ruled that the Gujarat government has the power to decide whether to release the accused. This sentence was handed down by a panel composed of judges Ajay Rostagi and Vikram Nath. The appeal for revocation was rejected against this sentence.
On 3 March 2002, during the Gujarat riots, rioters attacked Bilkis Banu. Bilquis Banu, five months pregnant, was brutally raped by the assailants. Seven women from their family were raped and killed by the assailants.
