Release of Emma Coronel Aispuro, Wife of El Chapo, After Two Years in Prison for Drug Trafficking and Money Laundering in Long Beach, California

LONG BEACH, KOMPAS.com – Emma Coronel Aispuro, wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman or El Chapo, was released on Wednesday (13/9/2023) after serving almost two of a three-year prison sentence for drug trafficking and money laundering.

Coronel (34) was released from detention in Long Beach, California, according to the United States (US) Federal Bureau of Prisons quoted by the AFP news agency.

The former beauty queen married El Chapo when she was still a teenager. He was sentenced to three years in prison by a US judge in November 2021.

Previously, El Chapo was extradited from Mexico to the US in 2017 and sentenced to life in prison in July 2019.

During the trial, prosecutors and lawyers said that Coronel was not involved in the core business of El Chapo’s Sinaloa Cartel, which sold hundreds of tons of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and other illegal drugs to “Uncle Sam’s Country”.

“The defendant’s role was actually very minimal,” said prosecutor Anthony Nardozzi.

“The defendant is not a leader, organizer, boss, or other type of manager,” continued Nardozzi. “Instead, he was a small cog in the wheel of a very large criminal organization.”

Coronel helped El Chapo escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. She frequently attended her husband’s trials in New York.

The woman with a dual US-Mexico passport can enter and leave both countries freely. Coronel was arrested at Dulles International Airport, outside Washington, in February 2021.
