Release date, cast and what the Tim Burton film is about – El Financiero

“The future is now, old man” and series like Cobra Kai (with its six seasons that show the future after The Karate Kid, 1984), Yo soy Betty, la fea: La historia continua (sequel 20 years after the 1999 Colombian soap opera) and Beetlejuice, which returns 36 years later, know that very well.

However, Tim Burton does not believe that a second film about his iconic ghost is a reliving of the past, but rather a renewal of his legacy: “For me, nostalgia is a foreign word. It wasn’t nostalgia, I saw it more as the reunion of a strange family.” Michael Keaton described it as a “true controlled artistic experiment.”

Burton attended a press conference in Mexico City on Tuesday, where he traveled with cast members Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux and producer Tommy Harper.

“For me, Beetlejuice is a character that I can’t explain too much because it comes from the subconscious in some way,” Burton said. “It’s like talking about a dream.”

Trailer: What is ‘Beetlejuice’ 2 about?

The film is a sequel to the original comedy about Beetlejuice, an exterminating ghost who appears when his name is said three times.

In the plot of this new film we see Astrid (Jenna Ortega), daughter of Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) dealing with high school life, she doesn’t believe in ghosts and feels ashamed of her mother. Due to events that are not yet detailed, Lydia is forced to say “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice”, which brings the ghost out of the shadows.

Burton noted that the effects used were practical rather than old-school computer-generated.

“It makes it more emotional, more personal and more fun,” said the director, who also noted that he didn’t take the first film as a total reference. “I started watching it and thinking, ‘I don’t understand any of this,’ and I did it.”

Who is the new Beetlejuice? Michael Keaton returns

Keaton first played Beetlejuice in 1988 and admitted that he didn’t feel entirely confident taking on the grotesque, crude character: “I was more nervous than I thought I would be.”

The actor of films such as Batman and Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) considers that “trying to do something that I cared so much about made me feel nervous.”

Jenna Ortega

Jenna Ortega, famous for the Merlina series, now plays Astrid, the daughter of Lydia Deetz, Winona Ryder’s character from the original film.

Ortega, who is of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent, felt very comfortable with Winona Rider during filming, while her character Astrid has an odd relationship with her parents, as she feels a little embarrassed by her success.

The 21-year-old actress was nominated for a Golden Globe and a SAG for the Netflix series Wednesday (Merlina), produced and directed by Burton.

“I think a lot of people are fascinated with death and what happens afterward. It’s a good way to laugh about it and the fact that it’s going to happen to everyone… I feel very grateful to be involved in this because I feel like it’s something that young people need right now,” the actress said.

Monica Bellucci

Monica Bellucci is happy to join this universe with her role as Delores, a “soul-sucking demon”:

“She has scars and we all have emotional scars, she (Delores) is a metaphor in some way. In Tim’s films there are always deep themes, even if it is a dark or absurd comedy,” said the Italian actress. “But there are always deep themes, like life, death and love.”

In real life, Bellucci is romantically involved with Burton.

Justin Theroux

Justin Theroux considers his character Rory to be a bit more ordinary than the others, and he stated that he is a fan of the original film.
