Relatives of the 43 arrive at a meeting with AMLO at the National Palace

Mexico City. Shortly after 11:30 in the morning, the majority of the parents of the 43 Ayotzinapa students who disappeared in 2014 arrived at the National Palace to meet with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

“It’s a procedural meeting,” said Vidulfo Rosales, the families’ lawyer, upon arrival, who said that the main thing will be to deliver the response to the President’s first report on the case.

Asked specifically whether at the end of the current administration we would be facing a new “historical truth,” he replied: “Not so much, rather what we see is that this administration was moving forward, there was important and significant progress, but when the investigation came with the Mexican army, there was no longer the will for that.”

The parents of the students arrived by bus on Correo Mayor Street, accompanied by their lawyers and representatives from the Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez and Tlachinollan Mountain Human Rights Centers, Serapaz and Fundar. They arrived in the middle of a line of about twenty riot police.

Families entered the historic site through the door located on Moneda Street, carrying images of their missing children.

Last Friday, they announced their position on the first report on the case prepared by the head of the Executive. They acknowledged the president’s will to find his children, but regretted that the lines of investigation have not been furthered, especially those in which members of the Army are involved in the events.

In their response to the president, they stressed that they had no intention of weakening the Army or serving outside interests. Their only and main interest was to find the students.

Regarding today’s meeting with the virtual president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, at the City Museum, lawyer Rosales said that they hope to leave “with the agreement that she will commit to making the Ayotzinapa case the center of her policy.”
