Criticism for lying and avoiding accountability during the position interview… request to resign
Minister Lee, sticking to his position in the Ministry of Public Administration and Security ”covering’… Popular Solidarity for Participatory Democracy “obstructing investigation”
“Minister Lee Sang-min lied and boasted that it could not have been solved by deploying fire and police personnel in advance…. What were you doing when the lives of our flower-like sons and daughters faded away like a candlelight?
Public Administration and Security Minister Lee Sang-min was called several times at a press conference held on the 22nd to express the position of the families of the victims of the ‘Itaewon Halloween Tragedy’. The bereaved families have asked Minister Lee, who is responsible for disaster management and security, to take responsibility. At the same time, he criticized Minister Lee’s attitude, which he has been constantly talking about since the disaster. A grieving family who met with People Power leadership the day before said: “I don’t see it as a disaster, but a vicarious assassination by the government.”
Minister Lee’s position, who draws a line on the theory of responsibility for the Itaewon disaster, is getting narrower by the day. The Special Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency (Special Version) has launched a mandatory investigation into the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, and families mourning the disaster have directly criticized Minister Lee.
After the disaster, the Minister Lee controversy continued. The 30th of last month, the day after the disaster, was just the beginning of remarks made to avoid accountability, saying: “It was not a problem that could be solved even if the police force were deployed in advance.” A similar story continued every day. The day before, it was revealed that the Ministry of Public Administration and Security had a list of families mourning the disaster. Minister Lee’s remarks to the National Assembly, saying: ‘I don’t even have a list of people, let alone contact numbers’, regarding information from families bereaved by the disaster, are either lies or statements that have not immediately been made fundamentals – control. At the time, Minister Lee also said, “I don’t know why the members don’t accept what the State Council member says and still think that he is lying.”
It’s not just fairy tales that arise from the absence of empathy and the attitude to avoid responsibility. It is emphasized that the fact that Minister Lee, who has been classified as a suspect on charges such as neglect of civil service and death by accident, is an obstacle to proper investigation and truth-finding.
For example, in materials distributed on the 10th and 21st, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security said: “[Lo scorso agosto]there were very strong objections in the process of setting up the police station and issuing the command rules, so the organization and manpower for the exercise of command and supervision rights were not taken into consideration.” .
The line was drawn when the ‘police accountability theory’ related to the disaster diffused into ‘Minister Lee accountability theory’. There are criticisms that this attitude by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, a top-level police agency, could serve as a guideline for special investigations.
The People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy released a statement immediately after the press conference for the bereaved family that day and said, “Despite being one of the top officials responsible for national disaster and security, Lee Sang-min of the Department of Public Administration and security denies state responsibility and has the right to appoint the police, which can influence the investigation of the special edition.” Unless the minister resigns, it is impossible to discover the truth and punish those responsible without the sanctuary of disaster.”
