In a notable diplomatic engagement, India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, raised concerns over prolonged visa delays with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during their recent meeting. The delays, Jaishankar emphasized, are not just bureaucratic hurdles but have far-reaching implications for business, tourism, and the broader India-US relationship.“When it came to various regulations and processes,I also flagged some concerns which are very widespread in India about delays in visas. And you know the relationship is not well-served if it takes that many days for people to get a visa. Ultimately, those visa delays do impact business, they do affect tourism… They in many ways constrain the people-to-people interaction, which is the foundation of our relationship,” Jaishankar stated during a briefing.
The meeting took place during Jaishankar’s three-day visit to the US, where he represented India at the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States. The minister’s front-row seat at the ceremony underscored the importance of India-US ties. When asked about the honor, Jaishankar remarked, “The special envoy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is naturally treated with great respect.”
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Jaishankar’s visit was marked by high-level engagements, including discussions with National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and participation in the inaugural Quad ministerial meeting with counterparts from Australia, Japan, and the US. These interactions highlighted the Trump administration’s keen interest in advancing the bilateral relationship.
“Clearly, there is an interest in taking the relationship forward. Now the exact mechanics of it, as and when we have something to tell you, we’d be happy to share with you. But I do remind you that the prime minister had a very early phone call with President Trump and that I had come last month and made the initial contact with the NSA. So, it should give you a direction in which the relationship is going,” Jaishankar explained.
He added, “I would say, one, it was very clear that the Trump administration was keen to have India present at the inaugural itself, and they’re clearly prioritising the bilateral relationship.”

Charting Course through Troubled Waters: Expert Insights on India-US Visa Delays and Bilateral Relations
Introduction:
The recent meeting between India’s External affairs Minister, Dr. S.Jaishankar, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has brought the contentious issue of visa delays back into the spotlight. As both nations strive to strengthen their bilateral ties, these delays pose important challenges, impacting business, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges. We sit down with Dr. Ravi Kumar, a renowned international relations specialist and author of “India-US Relations: A New Era,” to discuss the implications of these visa delays and the path forward for India-US ties.
visa Delays: A Thorny Issue
World-Today-News (WTN): Dr. Kumar, thank you for joining us today. Let’s start with the elephant in the room – visa delays. Why have these become such a persistent problem in India-US relations?
Dr. Ravi Kumar (RK): Thank you for having me. Visa delays have indeed become a significant irritant in India-US relations. there are multiple factors at play here, starting with increased security measures post-9/11, which have led to more stringent visa processing procedures. Additionally, staffing and resource constraints at US consulates in India have exacerbated the situation. However, it’s crucial to note that these delays aren’t just an administrative issue; they have far-reaching implications for the bilateral relationship.
Impact on Business and Tourism
WTN: Jaishankar highlighted how visa delays impact business and tourism. Could you elaborate on this?
RK: absolutely. these delays disrupt travel plans, leading to missed business opportunities and hindered tourism growth. Indian businesses rely heavily on US markets, and visa delays can hinder investments, partnerships, and trade. Similarly, tourism is an essential driver of economic growth for both countries. According to the US Travel Association, in 2019, Indians were among the top ten international visitors to the US, contributing over $14 billion to the US economy. Tho, visa delays can deter potential visitors, hindering this economic boost.
Constraining People-to-People Interaction
WTN: Jaishankar also stressed how visa delays constrain people-to-people interaction, the foundation of India-US relations. How so?
RK: People-to-people ties are the lifeblood of any bilateral relationship. Exchanges in education, culture, and technology foster mutual understanding and goodwill. But visa delays can impede these exchanges. Students, researchers, and scholars face prolonged waits, sometimes leading to missed academic or professional opportunities. moreover, family reunions and cultural exchanges are delayed, eroding the personal connections that underpin the broader relationship.
Addressing the Issue: A Mutual Effort
WTN: So, what can be done to address this issue? Is it solely a US responsibility, or do both sides need to step up?
RK: Both nations must play their part. The US could look into increasing staffing andresources at its consulates in India to handle the visa workload more efficiently. They could also explore digitizingmore of the visa application process to streamline procedures. On the Indian side, working on improving US citizens’ trust in Indian visa reciprocity and security measures could help alleviate some concerns. Additionally, both sides could explore mechanisms for enhanced visa facilitation, such as dedicated processing lanes for frequent travelers.
The Road Ahead
WTN: Despite these challenges, Jaishankar’s visits and the prioritization of India-US relations under the new US administration offer hope. What lies ahead for these ties?
RK: Indeed, there’s cause for optimism. both nations recognize the importance of a strong bilateral relationship. As they navigate complex global dynamics together, addressing issues like visa delays will be crucial. By fostering deeper collaboration and mutual trust, they can overcome these challenges and strengthen their strategic partnership. Though, consistent dialog, follow-through, and a mutually respectful approach must remain the cornerstones of their engagement.
