Rejuvenation Efforts at Slovan: Introducing New Signings and Promoting Young Talent – Coach Vladimír Weiss’s Plan

BRATISLAVA. “There must be a radical cut in the summer. We have an experienced but older team. We have to bring in young blood, freshen it up,” coach Vladimír Weiss promised at the end of last season. Only a few weeks have passed since then.

Weiss preached similar words last year and the year before. However, Slovan has not succeeded in rejuvenating the team so far, the players from the academy hardly got a chance.

The starting lineup, made up of the players Weiss trusted the most last year, averaged thirty years. That’s more than enough. What is currently happening in Slovan?

The Slovak master already introduced four new names during the transfer window.

Midfielder Kyriakos Savvidis (28) came from Trnava. He brought the Austrian representative Kevin Wimmer (30), who also worked in Tottenham in the past, into the defensive ranks.

Fullback Cesar Blackman (25) came from Dunajská Streda.

The latest reinforcement is the Croatian midfielder Marco Tolič (26), who last played for NK Maribor.

In addition, left defender Matúš Vojtko (23rd) returned from his loan at HNK Gorica.

“Three or four players from the starting line-up left. We have to strengthen ourselves. I will put pressure on the owner (Ivan Kmotrík Sr., editor’s note) and on little Ivan (Kmotrík Jr., general director of the club),” coach Vladimír Weiss said a few days ago.

Maybe he wouldn’t be if he did

He was interested in a young man who had recently turned eighteen. “I have been following him for several years, he is a great talent of Slovak football,” Weiss began mysteriously.
