Rejuvenated Azov Brigade Returns to Front: Latest Updates from Ukraine

The “Azov” brigade, which defended Mariupol, returned to the front, the representative of the National Guard of Ukraine, Colonel Mykola Urshalovich, announced.

“The legendary special purpose brigade “Azov” has been restored and began to perform combat tasks in the region of Serebrian Forestry”, Urshalovich said and added that the fighters “certainly hold the occupied positions and inflict crushing losses in manpower and equipment of the enemy”.

In the spring of 2022, Ukrainian fighters, including those from the Azov Regiment, defended the territory of the Azovstal plant in Mariupol for almost two months. In mid-May, the defenders of “Azovstal” left the territory of the plant by order of the command and were captured.

In September, military personnel leading the defense of Azovstal, including Azov commander Denis Prokopenko, were sent to Turkey under the terms of a prisoner-of-war swap between Russia and Ukraine. It was assumed that they would remain in Turkey until the end of the war. However, in July 2023, the commanders of “Azov” returned to Ukraine together with Volodymyr Zelensky, who was visiting Turkey. Russia accused Turkey and Ukraine of violating the agreements.

Prokopenko met with the regiment’s personnel in mid-July. Then the press service of “Azov” stated that Prokopenko will return to duty after undergoing rehabilitation.
