Rejection of expansion of Potsdam library

The town hall has rejected demands for an expansion of the children’s library. This is evident from a statement by the city administration in response to a motion by the Green and CDU factions.

The factions had called for the extension of the children’s library and the adult education center in the education forum on Platz der Einheit, which is threatened due to additional costs, to be secured. According to the text of the motion, the town hall should, despite the poor financial situation, plan the necessary funds for the extension in the next budget. The reason for the additional requirement is the predictably higher construction costs for the project, which is planned as part of the construction of the Block IV residential and commercial block in Potsdam’s center from 2026.

The city administration now argues that the binding declaration of a rental obligation to Pro Potsdam intended with the application goes far beyond the previous declaration of intent made subject to financing. “Implementation is not planned in the medium-term financial planning.”

With a term of 25 years, the total volume is around 15 million euros. “As the project will not be part of the ‘National Urban Development Projects’ funding program, the costs would have to be borne entirely by the LHP,” it continued. The corresponding financial means are not available.
