There is a succession of plays reinterpreting Shakespeare’s masterpieces ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Macbeth’ in a modern way.
By changing the character of the characters or the background of the work, we broaden sympathy with the audience and ask fundamental questions about the way of existence and human nature.
This is reporter Kyo-Jun Lee’s report.

Hamlet, who continues his monologue while taking steps, is different from the original Hamlet.
Rather than being an indecisive prince, he was portrayed as a person who constantly thinks, moves, and finds a way to go.
The play ‘Hamlet, the Walking Man’ attempts drastic changes, such as reinterpreting the original characters and adding new scenes, such as the love story between Hamlet and Ophelia.
It focuses on four key characters – Hamlet, Claudius, Gertrude, and Ophelia – and shows their different attitudes toward life, raising serious questions about where we are headed through fierce humanistic debates between the characters.

Master director Tae-sook Han’s modern reinterpretation of ‘Macbeth’ will also be staged again.
It transfers the medieval setting of the original work to a modern-day battlefield with the sound of gunfire and shows a corrupt army.
Actor Jaewoong Yoon takes on the role of Macbeth, which was played passionately by actor Jeon Park-chan at the time of the premiere, and delivers an acting of a different texture.
The destruction of a leader obsessed with greed reminds us of the transience of power and desire.
