Reino Börjesson: A Key Player in Sweden’s WC58 Success

Börjesson was born in 1929 in Partille and started playing football in Jonsereds IF. The talent took him as a 20-year-old to IFK Göteborg, where he played from 1949 to 1953. In total, he made 98 A-team matches, of which 33 in the Allsvenskan, for the club and accounted for 53 goals in these.

The career ended in Norrby.

Börjesson also achieved great success with the national team. He pulled on the blue and yellow jersey on a total of ten occasions.

Börjesson was part of the national team’s squad for the WC in 1958. He started the tournament on the bench but got the chance in the third group stage match. He then made the right-half position his own and was a regular for the remainder of the championship.

Börjesson started in the WC final against Brazil at Råsunda. Sweden lost the match 5–2 and took silver with it – Sweden’s best ever placing in a men’s WC tournament.

Reino Börjesson’s father, Erik Börjesson, also played for several years in the national team as well as Jonsered and IFK Göteborg. He was one of the biggest stars of the early 20th century and was inducted into the Swedish Football Hall of Fame in 2004.

– Börjesson is a cornerstone in the association and a family with a big football heart and success. Jonsered is usually called the cradle of football and there Reino and his father have been the start to the level of club and dignity that the club is in Sweden today, says Peter Eriksson, chairman of Jonsered IF.

Bo Andersson, who has been involved in Jonsereds IF for many years, got to know Reino Börjesson both as a friend and club colleague.

– It is very tragic. He was a fantastic person and above all a player who made others in the team better. He poured in goals too, but he was a very important team player.

Reino Börjesson fell asleep on Saturday night after being ill with pneumonia for some time. He was 94 years old.

With his passing, there are now only two Swedish WC58 players left alive – Kurre Hamrin and Owe Ohlsson.
