Reinier’s Struggles: From Brazilian Wonderkid to Real Madrid Nightmare

When he swept through the Brazilian Série A at the age of just 17 and scored a strong six goals in his first 14 games, the world of football was completely open to him. But since the quick dream transfer to Real Madrid, offensive talent Reinier (21) has been steadily going downhill.

The jump to Europe, which millions of footballers in Brazil dream of, was made by the former junior international before his 18th birthday – with a six-and-a-half-year contract and a substantial salary. But in terms of sport, the dream has now become a “nightmare”.

Reinier is still unable to meet high expectations

At least that’s how the Spanish daily sports newspaper “AS” called Reinier’s situation on Friday (August 4, 2023), who is currently back on the training ground in Madrid. However, completely alone, while the colleagues are touring through the USA in the pre-season.

It was already clear at the start of the preparations that coach Carlo Ancelotti (64) would not rely on Reinier, who, three and a half years after his transfer for 30 million euros, has not yet played a single professional game for the royal team.

There are now 45 first division games in Spain (18) and Germany (27) and five appearances in the European Cup with Borussia Dortmund. However, the total of around 1400 competitive game minutes in three years shows that Reinier is still a long way from a breakthrough.

Last year he went on loan to FC Girona, in the first and last third of the season he was in demand as a joker and occasionally even appeared in the starting XI. But the one-year extension that had already been negotiated fell through in the end because the Catalans had opted for a different type of player.

Reinier is working towards a new loan in individual training

And now? The former 30 million jewel still has no buyers and is only worth a fraction of the transfer fee at the time. Where the 2021 Olympic champion will continue is completely open a month before the transfer window closes.

The only thing that is clear is that there is definitely no place at Real Madrid. And the interested parties are not exactly queuing up. “I just wanted to get away,” Reinier said last year about his unhappy time in the Bundesliga. But a real goal has not been found.

The mediocre following year, including a longer injury break in Girona, was not exactly good for his sluggish development, and the bursting whereabouts also gnawed at Reinier. The fact that he is now preparing for the new season alone in Madrid does not give much hope for improvement.
