President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo asserted that her administration’s security strategy will be based on attention to the causes of violence and crime, but at the same time will include the reinforcement of intelligence, investigation, the National Guard and greater coordination of forces to reduce impunity.
During this Friday morning, he highlighted that the greatest achievement of his predecessor, former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, was that the number of homicides in the country began a downward trend, unlike what had been happening in the six-year terms of Felipe Calderón and Enrique Peña Nieto.
The federal president stressed that in security “it is not that everything is already done,” which is why her administration works every day to improve the situation in the country.
“The way of governing changed from paraphernalia and privileges to allocating public resources for the people. At the same time, the reduction of poverty and inequalities. That is what they (opponents) have not fully understood, which is why the movement we represent has very strong popular support, because it has given results.”
The head of the Executive insisted that López Obrador’s “great achievement” “was to change the trend and change the model of attention to insecurity, putting a lot of emphasis on attention to the causes, and not for that reason failing to attend to the presence, the constitution of the National Guard, arrests, drug seizures, that is, both parts: attention to the causes and reducing impunity.
“The great achievement was changing the trend. Imagine that President López Obrador had not arrived, the upward trend would have continued, nothing had changed. Between Calderón and Peña Nieto the strategy was very similar, the only change was that the Ministry of Public Security stopped being a secretariat and became part of the Ministry of the Interior, but there were no changes in strategy.
This, he added, caused that from the beginning of the so-called “war on drug trafficking”, initiated by Calderón, until 2018, at the end of Peña Nieto’s six-year term, there was “an increase in homicides; Afterwards (with López Obrador) there was a way that remained constant and then a decline began.
“The opponents said that there were many homicides, well yes, but that does not mean that there is not a downward trend, and the INEGI reporters confirm it and we say that this trend will continue.”
