In context events taking place in the Middle East and of terrorist knife attack which took place on October 13, 2023 in a high school in Arras, Vigipirate posture was raised at the “Emergency attack” level throughout the national territory. Consequently, the prefect of Hérault François Xavier Lauch decided to set up specific security measures and calls on everyone to be extremely vigilant.
Reinforced security measures
As of Friday, the prefect of Hérault François-Xavier Lauch gave instructions to the police and national gendarmerie to secure the surroundings of schools and asked mayors to mobilize the municipal police force under their authority as well as the supervision centers urban.
Particular vigilance is paid to educational establishments, higher education and research establishments as well as places of worship for which reinforced security measures are put in place:
Enhanced surveillance around designated facilities/buildings. Restriction or even prohibition of activities around designated installations/buildings. Access control of people, vehicles and objects entering buildings open to the public. Increased surveillance and control of gatherings (religious, political, sporting, cultural demonstrations). Implementation of devices to prohibit access to the site or reduce the speed of vehicles near gathering places.
Sentinel force doubled
Furthermore, the military system of the Sentinelle force, already deployed in Hérault, is doubled to support the internal security forces in carrying out their missions to fight terrorism, protect and reassure the population in sensitive sectors and with high attendance.
These military reinforcements are deployed in Béziers (city center) in Montpellier (Odysseum shopping center and Sud de France train station) as well as at Montpellier-Mediterranean airport. The prefect of Hérault also thanked the mayor of Béziers Robert Ménard for “his full mobilization regarding the rapid establishment of a system to accommodate these military reinforcements”.
