On Tuesday, the municipal council in Moskenes in Lofoten stepped in to offer civil weddings at, among other things, the popular tourist destination Reinebringen.

And the price tag, yes, it is NOK 50,000.

It is The Lofoten post office which first mentioned the municipal council’s decision.

If you want to get married at the lesser-known destination of Einangen, about an hour’s drive away, the price is the same.

– As the municipality of Moskenes is not in a very good position financially, this is a measure so that the politicians here can bring in money in a creative way, and to use the nature around us, says mayor, Hanna Sverdrup to VG.

– It requires a lot of time and resources to get up there, which is why the price is set at 50,000.

However, if you would rather get married at Glåpen lighthouse near Sørvågen, the price tag is NOK 15,000. Other places within driving distance in Moskenes will cost NOK 5,000.

The municipality estimates to earn 200,000 from the initiative, according to The Lofoten post office.

Sverdrup emphasizes that Moskenes’ residents can get married free of charge in the municipality.

It is Sverdrup himself, in addition to the deputy mayor and the municipal director, who are responsible for the municipal weddings.

– The price tag is also somewhat related to the fact that I won’t have to go up to Reinebringen so much, jokes Sverdrup.

Trial project

The offer to get married on the mountain top is part of a trial project.

– We have to carry out a risk analysis of this project, and how we can practically carry out weddings. Especially related to how many guests you can have at the wedding and opportunities to change on the mountaintop.

– You can’t go up the mountain in a wedding dress – then at least it won’t be white when you get to the top, says the mayor.

However, weddings at Reinebringen will only be possible in the summer.

– The municipality is located at the far end of Lofoten and the weather is quite bad here. Thus, weddings will only be possible as long as the weather permits.

– Has anyone expressed an interest?

– Yes! But they stop answering when I say the price, concludes the mayor.
