In Winterthur, the renovation of the Zur Kesselschmiede track is being tackled.
On the street Zur Kesselschmiede, in the crossing area Wylandbrücke, Katharina-Sulzer-Platz, railway tracks run at an acute angle over the roadway. When cyclists crossed the tracks, there were always accidents. The city has now agreed on structural measures with Implenia as the owner. They are currently being implemented.
The track system on the Zur Kesselschmiede road at the intersection of Wylandbrücke and Katharina-Sulzer-Platz repeatedly led to accidents among cyclists who slipped or intervened and fell on the wet tracks. Neither filling the tracks with a special rubber nor setting up a meeting zone could noticeably improve the situation.
Rehabilitation of the track system
The track system is now being rehabilitated, the rubber removed and filled with a road surface. In addition, the road surface in front of, between and after the track is increased, which is intended to minimize the risk of slipping.
Implementation has already started and will continue today. Depending on the weather, further work is planned and will be completed by the beginning of July.
The weak point for cyclists is to be remedied in the long term
To reduce the risk of accidents, dismantling the plant was also discussed. The locomotives of the Swiss Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM) and Sulzer once drove their very first meters over the tracks. They should therefore be preserved as contemporary witnesses of the industrial location Winterthur.
For this purpose, after the renovation by Implenia, the track system will become the property of the civil engineering department of the City of Winterthur, which has campaigned for the preservation of the track system for monument conservation reasons.
The civil engineering department and Implenia are convinced that this measure will permanently remedy this dangerous weak point for cyclists.
