Rehabilitation and Extension of Achicourt Sunflower Swimming Pool: A Unique Project by Z Architecture

It is one of those which has not been demolished and which remains in operation. The Achicourt sunflower swimming pool (Pas-de-Calais), called “pumpkin” by locals for its yellow-orange color, will benefit from rehabilitation and an extension. The design was entrusted to the Z Architecture agency. The firm won the architectural competition, launched by the urban community of Arras, for this unique project.

What work is required?

The complete rehabilitation of this building built in 1977 will include the conservation and upgrading of the dome and its 36 characteristic arches. A new opening mechanism will allow the hull to open generously onto the exterior spaces. The current pool will be covered in stainless steel. In addition, “renewable energies are favored with the exploitation of the urban heat network (geothermal and biomass) and the recovery of calories,” adds Z Architecture in a press release.

In addition, the operation provides for an extension, “sober and compact”. This new space will allow the addition of new functions. There we can find a learning pool, a paddling pool, a solarium, individual and collective changing rooms, administrative premises. The architectural firm also redesigned the circulation patterns in order to promote natural light. Finally, the rehabilitation will guarantee reception and accessibility to all types of disabilities.

All these interventions will make it possible to increase the surface area of the equipment by 61%, to reach 1,670 m² in total. The construction site should start in October 2024, for delivery at the end of 2025. The cost of the work is estimated at more than 6.9 million euros excluding tax.
