Regulator ACM Finds Travel Providers Failing to Display Transparent Prices, Potential Fines Looming

Aug 08, 2023 at 10:21 AM Update: 6 minutes ago

Eleven of the twelve travel providers show prices on their website for which the holiday cannot be booked at all. This is evident from an audit by the regulator ACM. The travel providers must have their affairs in order within eight weeks, otherwise fines will follow.

The price at which a trip is offered should be available at all, according to the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). That is not always the case yet. The supervisor then speaks of decoys.

It may well be that the price depends on when you want to go on holiday. But from the moment you fill in when you want to travel, according to ACM, it should be immediately clear which costs are involved. Not until later in the booking process.

Costs that you only have to pay at your holiday destination must also be clearly displayed in the total price. So not hidden behind an information button.

“A consumer must be able to compare prices of travel offers properly, because price is one of the most important criteria in his choice,” says ACM director Edwin van Houten. According to him, it is now the travel industry’s turn to show that they take customers seriously.

In 2022, the regulator also reprimanded providers of holiday homes about the transparency of prices shown. According to ACM, they subsequently adjusted their price statement.

Travel industry wants to talk about local taxes

Frank Oostdam, director of travel umbrella organization ANVR, agrees with ACM that travel providers should provide insight into all costs at the time of booking.

He is less enthusiastic about showing additional costs at the destination. “Then you would have to convert all local taxes, such as an environmental tax, into a single price in euros in a foreign currency. That is impossible,” says Oostdam. “That requirement is not reasonable and we want to discuss this with ACM.”
