Regular exercise helps reduce diabetes risk

Purwokerto (ANTARA) – A specialist in internal medicine from the Indonesian Association of Internal Medicine (PAPDI) Purwokerto dr. Andreas, Sp.PD reminded that regular exercise can help reduce the risk of diabetes mellitus.

“Exercise and physical activity on a regular basis can help reduce the risk of diabetes mellitus, in order to balance the incoming calories with those used,” he said in a virtual interview with ANTARA in Purwokerto, Banyumas Regency, Sunday.

He also added that in addition to exercise and physical activity, other efforts that need to be made to reduce the risk of diabetes are consistently maintaining a diet, controlling the mind so as not to stress and regulating sleep patterns.

“What needs to be considered is to regulate the diet so that it is not excessive, balance the calories that enter with those used for physical activity, and implement other healthy lifestyles,” he said.

He added that a person also needs to check blood sugar levels regularly at least once a year.

“Implementing a ‘medical check up’ or checking blood sugar levels needs to be done, indeed the more routine the better, but if it can’t be routine, it can be done at least once a year, for example on your birthday to make it easier to remember the date of the routine checkup,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also added that diabetes mellitus is a disease that is simply defined by an increase in blood sugar levels.

“Suppose the current sugar level is more than 200 and the fasting sugar level is more than 125,” he said.

In general, he said, there are classic symptoms that accompany diabetes, such as frequent urination, thirst and always wanting to drink or even being hungry often.

“The most common symptom is weight loss for no apparent reason. To find out if someone has diabetes, in addition to understanding the symptoms, it is also necessary to check blood sugar levels regularly,” he said.

If in the examination the blood sugar level appears to have increased then it is necessary to do further examination to find out the cause of the increase in blood sugar.

He added that the risk factors for diabetes include family history or heredity, age, obesity, and a history of high blood pressure.

Meanwhile, related to World Diabetes Day on November 14, he said, it could be the right momentum to increase socialization and campaigns in the community regarding the dangers of diabetes.
