Suara.com – Mold It is considered a superfood because it is packed with several vitamins and minerals, thus offering a variety of health benefits.
A new study, led by Penn State College of Medicine, recently found that mushroom consumption may lower the risk of depression.
Reported from The HealthsiteAfter examining data on diet and mental health collected from more than 24,000 U.S. adults between 2005 and 2016, researchers found that participants who ate mushrooms were less likely to develop depression.
Why mushrooms may have mental health benefits is likely because they contain ergothioneine, antioxidant which can protect against cell and tissue damage in the body, the researchers said.

Antioxidants in preventing some mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression have also been shown in previous studies.
On the other hand, mushrooms contain ergothioneine, an antioxidant that may lower the risk of oxidative stress and reduce symptoms of depression, the researchers said.
“Mushrooms are the highest dietary source of the anti-inflammatory amino acid ergothioneine that cannot be synthesized by humans. Having high levels of this can lower the risk of oxidative stress, which can also reduce symptoms of depression,” said lead researcher Djibril Ba.
However, the researchers found no clear added benefit with the relatively high intake of mushrooms.
As additional information, button mushroom contains potassium, which can help reduce anxiety. Hericium erinaceus, also known as Lion’s Mane, and several other edible mushroom species can stimulate the expression of neurotrophic factors that may help prevent neuropsychiatric disorders including depression.
