KYIV – Lots of soldiers Ukraine those who have no experience in the battlefield must bear enormous risks. Not a few of them also regretted fighting against Russia.
As disclosed Ruslan Proektor, 52, a Ukrainian soldier who lost his leg in battle told The Washington Post that he would not voluntarily fight for his country again. He expressed rare but growing pessimism around the war.
Proctor, 52, told The Washington Post he lost his leg this summer after stepping on a Russian mine. “The soldier who rescued the Proektor also stepped on a mine, causing additional injuries,” he said.
Proektor, who is now recovering in Kyiv, said that if he were given the option to join the military now, he would not enlist.
“They took everyone and sent them to the front without proper preparation,” he told The Washington Post. “I don’t want to be in a place where people are not motivated.”
It is unclear which brigade Proektor is fighting in or whether he has any military experience prior to the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022.
Ukraine is deep in a much-anticipated counteroffensive meant to regain territory in the east and south of the country.
Many of the units sent into combat in this area are drawn from the brigades that have been hastily trained and equipped in NATO countries over the past months. These troops suffered heavy losses compared to the more experienced units but were worse equipped.
