Registration for the Riga Marathon begins, no joint start for runners is planned / Article / LSM.lv

Exactly five months before the start of the event, the registration for the 31st “Rimi” Riga Marathon was opened, which will take place at the end of the summer on August 28 and 29. The organizers anticipate that the restrictions on assembly will remain, so the marathon is planned without a mass start and with a limited number of participants, so that all epidemiological safety measures are observed.

IN SHORT:

  • The number of participants in the distances will be limited, the start of each distance will take several hours
  • Participants will have to arrive in the start area at a certain time, no more than 4 runners will go on the track at the same time
  • Registration of participants will last until August 15, a more advantageous participation fee is planned until June 1
  • Applications for the Marathon Children’s Day small distances will start accepting on June 1

Children’s Day and the Family Race Marathon will take place on August 28, while a day later the participants of the marathon, half marathon, 10 km and 5.5 km race will start on the new tracks with the start at the Freedom Monument.

“Rimi” Riga Marathon Director Aigars Nords explained that the organizers do not anticipate major changes in the situation of Covid-19 in Latvia in the next five months. He sees in the society emotional fatigue from the pandemic and stressed that

the event industry needs to learn to create new format events that can safely take place in person.

“Even if the restrictions are relaxed and outdoor competitions are allowed, masks, distance and hand disinfection will remain,” Nords said. “Taking into account the new order, however, we want to give the runners the opportunity to run their distance in person, enjoying Riga and the new tracks with a start at the Freedom Monument and a finish on November 11 in Krastmala. No mass start, no gathering, but in person.”

The marathon is planned to introduce a new type of start all day long, which will exclude gatherings. In each distance, the start will take several hours, with two to four runners going on the track every five seconds. The start area will be restricted to runners only and a distance of two meters will be observed in the start corridors. Upon receipt of the start number, participants will be given a specific start time when to arrive and go their distance.

This will allow the organizers to calculate the exact number of participants who will be able to safely participate in the marathon, and

the number of participants in each distance will be limited.

Taking into account the unpredictability of the spread of Covid-19, the “Rimi” Riga Marathon in the new dates can also be virtual and will be adjusted on March 28-29. restrictions on public measures in force in August.

Runners who moved their membership to 2021 in the summer of 2020 will receive a free re-registration code via email. For other participants, registration by June 1 will be more advantageous. Registration for Children’s Day short distances for children under 12 will start on June 1. The organizers will report in detail on the course of the Latvian School Cup and the possibility to register for certain distances for a reduced participation fee in April.
