In order to be prepared for all eventualities, the organizers of the 19th Oberbank Linz Danube Marathon are planning, so to speak, twice this year. The implementation of running events as so-called “virtual runs” has already been tried and tested many times around the world – every runner chooses their own favorite route at home and then uploads the time result to a joint participation list. This is, so to speak, the iron reserve for another lockdown in autumn. In the past twelve months in particular, this has established itself very well as a targeted alternative with limited contact options, according to the organizers in a broadcast. With the “greatest care” one works above all on the live implementation of the running sport event.
Largest running event in Upper Austria
The first Linz Marathon was held in 2002 with 5,000 participants, and has long since become Upper Austria’s largest running event. With around 20,000 participants and 100,000 spectators from almost 80 nations, the multiple “marathon of the year” in Austria is now an important economic factor and tourist magnet with thousands of overnight stays in the region every year, explain the organizers.
Also planned for this year junior marathon
While the “big” marathon is to take place on Sunday, October 24th, the younger runners can start on Saturday, October 23rd, at the “ÖGK Junior Marathon powered by Radio Obgerösterreich”.
