Registered unemployment grew in January in the Canary Islands by 9,793 people | BE Las Palmas

The number of unemployed registered in the public employment offices of the Canary Islands grew in January by 9,793 people, 3.63 percent, the highest increase in the entire country, to stand at a total of 279,230 unemployed.

According to data published by the Ministry of Labor, at the moment the unemployment lists in the Canary Islands are made up of 68,066 more people than a year ago, which represents a year-on-year increase of 32.23%, ten and a half points higher than the average ( 21.84%).

By provinces, unemployment increased by 5,097 people in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 3.93% compared to December, to reach a total of 134,793 unemployed, 32,761 more than a year ago (+32.11%).

Las Palmas ended January with 144,437 registered unemployed, 4,696 more than in December (+3.36%) and 35,305 more than in January 2020 (+32.35%).

Of the total number of unemployed persons on the islands, 127,504 are men and 151,726 are women; and 23,300 of them are under 25 years of age (12,695 males and 10,605 females).

Last month, unemployment grew in all activity sectors of the Canarian economy: by 8,512 in services, by 422 in construction, by 218 in industry, by 51 in agriculture and by 590 in the group of plaintiffs without last job.

At the moment, the Canary Islands have 214,028 registered unemployed in services, 25,804 in construction, 10,114 in industry, 5,755 in rural areas and 23,529 in the group without previous employment.

In January, 33,340 employment contracts were signed on the islands, 5,326 less than in December (-13.77%) and 32,071 less than a year ago (-49.03%).

Of the global number of contracts, only 4,594 were permanent, 316 more than in December (+7.39%), but 3,248 less than in the same month of 2020 (-41.42%).

Regarding temporary contracts, 28,746 were signed, 5,642 less than in December (-16.41%) and 28,823 less than twelve months ago (-50.07%).
