Regis Prograis, holder of the World Boxing Council (WBC) super lightweight title, assured that Devin Haney was wrong to choose him as his next opponent, he does not believe that the undefeated undisputed lightweight champion has the necessary qualities to resist in the ring during his debut at 140 pounds.
Both will face each other on December 9 at the Chase Center in San Francisco and the announcement was made by Matchroom Boxing, from promoter Eddie Hearn, which promotes Prograis and Haney, officially indicating that their 12-round fight for the Prograis title They will star in a DAZN Pay-Per-View.
“Since my last fight they mentioned Devin, he’s the only person I have in mind. I’m going to beat up and hurt this kid. There’s nothing he can do that’s going to stop me from dominating. It’s going to be a massacre and I’m going to hurt him,” he said. Prograis in a press release issued by Matchroom.
Prograis has knocked out 80 percent of his opponents since making his professional debut in April 2012.
But in his last fight he went to the end, when Danielito Zorrilla got up from a knockdown in the third round, was reluctant to fight thereafter and won 12 rounds of Prograis on June 17 at the Smoothie King Center in Nueva Orleans.
However, Prograis won the match against Zorrilla by a wide decision according to judges Josef Mason (117-110) and Robert Tapper (118-109), but the aforementioned fall was the only thing that separated them on judge Craig Metcalfe’s card (114-113).
Meanwhile, Haney unanimously defeated three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko in their most recent matchup, for Haney’s IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO belts. The match was considered very competitive by fans and the media.
Haney will make his professional debut at this meeting in the city where he was born. He is confident that competing at a higher weight will make him a fresher fighter and he will be able to better respond to punches even from an opponent of Prograis’ strength.
“This is a difficult fight because it is my first fight in a heavier weight division. I am comfortable with the plan we have. God willing, I will be stronger and faster and I will dominate it and the junior welterweight division will be warned “Haney said.
Despite Prograis’ prediction, Haney indicated that it is nothing more than a business.
“It’s not personal. At the end of the day it’s a business, we’re two gentlemen, but when we get in the ring we don’t have to respect each other, so I’ll go in there and do my job,” Haney said.
