Jakarta –
As an official, a person does have the authority to give orders to his subordinates. But this official is very unwise because he uses his authority to drain the reservoir to get back his cell phone which was plunged into the water.
This was done by a regional official in India named Rajesh Vishwas. Iaa is known to drop his cellphone into a reservoir while taking selfies. As a result of his selfish behavior asking for the reservoir to be drained in order to find his cellphone, Rajesh is also penalized and suspended.
Quoted from the BBC, it took three days to pump millions of liters of water out of the dam. At the time it was found, of course, the cellphone was soaked and could not turn on because it had been submerged in water for days. However, Rajesh argued that the cell phone contained sensitive government data, so it had to be retrieved. Even so, he was still considered to have abused his position as an official to inconvenience many people.
He dropped his Samsung cellphone worth around 100 thousand rupees or the equivalent of Rp. 18 million into the Kherkatta Dam, in the state of Chhattisgarh, central India, on Sunday (28/5) last week.
After local divers failed to find him, he had a diesel pump brought in. He said he received verbal permission from an official to channel water into a nearby canal. He also added that the official said this move would actually benefit farmers in order to get more water for their farms.
The pump ran for several days, emptying about two million liters of water. This amount of water is enough to irrigate 600 hectares of agricultural land. But then his mission was stopped when another official from the water resources department, came to respond to the complaints of the farmers.
“He has been suspended pending investigation. Water is an important resource and cannot be wasted like this,” said Priyanka Shukla, a local district official.
Meanwhile, Rajesh denied abusing his position, saying that the water he was draining came from an overflowing section of the dam and was not in a usable condition.
But his actions have drawn criticism from politicians and other officials. “When people depend on tankers for water facilities in the hot summers, one official is draining millions of liters of water that should be used for irrigation and could be used for hectares of land,” one official quipped.
