Regional Hospital began the immunization process against syncytial virus in infants – 2024-04-05 22:12:30

Faced with the action of a virus whose incidence and severity especially affect infants, the Ministry of Health (MINSAL) included in its strategy the drug “Nirsevimab”, a long-acting monoclonal antibody, which began its inoculations this April 1 in all the country’s health centers. One of them was the Dr. Franco Ravera Zunino Hospital (HFRZ).

“We know that the respiratory syncytial virus has a high impact on public health, so starting the administration process of this medication against this pathogen on time, within the framework of the 2024 winter campaign, gives us the opportunity to optimize plus our clinical work, prevent serious respiratory diseases that the virus causes in newborns and infants, reducing their mortality. It is a necessary protection for our daughters and sons, a benefit not only because it is free, but because it will allow us to face the season with better tools,” said the director(s) of the Dr. Franco Ravera Hospital, Adolfo Beck.

With the above, midwife Paula Caviedes, supervisor of the HFRZ Puerperium and Childcare Unit, pointed out that “we began to inoculate newborns, high-risk infants and babies in the office, in the Neonatology and Puerperium units of our hospital. up to six months of age”, adding that, “the idea is to anticipate the winter period that projects an increase in the circulation of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in addition to other viral pathologies of the respiratory tract. “It is an antibody that is injected as a single dose intramuscularly, which so far has had a good reception from parents and a good reaction from babies.”

“It is important to decide to immunize our little ones against the syncytial virus, taking advantage of the moment when they are born, and before being discharged, which is my case, to protect them well during this winter,” stressed patient Yerli Gallardo, whose newborn daughter was one of the babies who have received the dose of “Nirsevimab” these days.

For her part, the also recent mother, Nayeli Moreno, stressed that “they asked me if I wanted to inoculate my son and I said yes, and I am very calm about doing it since it is a way to help them in this most delicate stage. There have been people infected with the virus in my family and it is very complex if you do not have a preventive measure like this, which is now available for the benefit of many babies,” she concluded.
