The foster family is an essential link in the chain of solidarity in the education of the guide dog: it is thanks to them that the dog will be balanced and socialised. A foster family provides a warm home for the puppy and gives it all the love it needs. He contributes to his pre-education, especially through puppy courses held twice a month at the Foundation by educators, to make him an exemplary dog: cleanliness and obedience.
No guide dogs without foster family
Furthermore, the host family socializes the animal by introducing it to as many daily situations as possible (public transport, shops, shows, noises, smells, etc.).
As a reminder, we use the term “host family” but the profiles can be very varied: single person, couple with or without children, pensioners, etc. All dogs are raised from their two and a half to three months in foster care. Today, the Gaillanne foundation is actively seeking foster homes for 8 as yet unplaced puppies. “At the same time, we are constantly looking for new host families to take care of our guide dog trainees. Whether it’s for a weekend or during the holidays, this is what we call ‘relay families’. The foster family plays a very important role in the education of the dog, and through this voluntary action, contributes concretely to our cause”
The Frédéric Gaillanne Foundation accompanies foster families throughout the process to make the experience as comfortable as possible for them and the dogs. All costs are borne by the Foundation.
