Regina Sommer and IWA President Tom Mollenkopf
(Vienna, 21-08-2024) Regina Sommer, Head of the Water Hygiene Department at the Institute of Hygiene and Applied Immunology (Center for Pathophysiology, Infectiology and Immunology) at MedUni Vienna, has been appointed Fellow of the International Water Association (IWA).
The International Water Association (IWA) is the leading network and global knowledge hub in the field of water, connecting scientists with experts from the community, business and practice to develop sustainable solutions through innovative research. The IWA is a non-profit organization that has existed for over 70 years and has around 10,000 members from over 140 countries.

Regina Sommer studied food and biotechnology at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences. She completed her PhD at the Hygiene Institute of the Medical University of Vienna, where she qualified as a professor in water and food hygiene in 1999. Sommer has headed the Water Hygiene Department at the Institute of Hygiene and Applied Immunology since 1998, where she set up the Hygiene Vienna testing and inspection center, which has been accredited since 2004. Together with Andreas Farnleitner (TU Vienna, KL Krems), she is co-director of the Interuniversity Cooperation Center (ICC) Water and Health, which she co-founded and which was set up between MedUni Vienna, TU Vienna and Karl Landsteiner University Krems. She also received the Austrian Hygiene Prize in 1992 and 2000, was chairwoman of the Austrian Society for Hygiene, Microbiology and Preventive Medicine and is chairwoman of the Codex Commission for Drinking Water of the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection.
