Hemer Regina Haller from Zurich provided information about the concept of the “New Authority” in a teacher training course at the Hemer European School.
How do schools create a good learning atmosphere, how can conspicuous children and young people be taught respect, and how can peace and safety be achieved? The concept of “New Authority – Professional Presence” is a starting point. At the invitation of the European School Hemer, the staff of the European School and representatives of the other Hemeran schools met for an educational training event in the auditorium of the comprehensive school to personally get to know the concept of “New Authority – Professional Presence” from the author and headmaster Regina Haller.

Regina Haller is the headmistress at a large school in Zurich and a few years ago encountered major challenges at her school that she wanted to overcome with innovative concepts and creative ideas. She learned the Israeli language Family therapist Prof. Haim Omer from Tel Aviv who has been successfully applying the principle of “New Authority” in family therapy for many years. Headmaster Regina Haller had the idea of adapting this concept to her school and it has now been used there and in many other Swiss schools for twelve years with good results.
Change the child’s behavior positively
This is what the “New Authority” says Child at the center. If something is wrong with the child, there is no need for a complex analysis; rather, the immediate prevailing situation or undesirable behavior is addressed in an appreciative, empathetic and appropriate manner. The aspects of self-control, presence, de-escalation, persistence and reparation are particularly important in order to positively change behavior almost as if by magic.

Headmaster Kai Hartmann has already been able to name a few successful examples in which he has tried out the concept. Regina Haller’s lecture also came alive with the many anecdotes and entertaining scenes from the everyday school life the Zurich school director. The approving reactions of the teachers present confirmed that Regina Haller is a woman of the subject. The concept has now also been adopted by the school supervisory authorities and will also be of great importance in teacher training in the future. “The Hemeran schools are at least now getting started and will certainly quickly be able to demonstrate initial successes like those in Zurich and Switzerland,” reports Kai Hartmann.
