On October 11th, the staff of State Police in service at the Flying Squad of Reggio Calabria carried out a precautionary measure of custody in prison, issued by the Judge for Preliminary Investigations at the Court of Reggio Calabria, against a man involved in a case of attempted aggravated extortion. The man is the brother of the victim of a homocidewhich occurred in May 2023 in Marconi district.
The context of the murder
The victim was shot and died shortly after in hospital. Investigations revealed that the murder occurred within the context of strong family friction. The recipient of the precautionary measure is accused of having carried out a series of extortionate acts against a well-known lawyer of the court of Reggio Calabria.
Attempted extortion and acts of intimidation
The man allegedly carried out various intimidating behaviors, includingcar fire used by the lawyer, in an attempt to force him to renounce the defense mandate in favor of the perpetrator of the murder, who is also the victim’s brother-in-law. At the basis of these actions there would be the suspect’s desire to obtain theexclusive custody of the murderer’s children to his sister, causing economic damage to the lawyer, who would have lost the right to compensation for the work carried out. Despite attempts at intimidation, the lawyer maintained his mandate.

Thanks to one meticulous investigative activitycoordinated by the local Public Prosecutor’s Officethe police managed to reconstruct the extortion dynamics carried out by the man, recognizing him as the author of the car fire.
