The blockchain continues to gain followers, even after quite spectacular backfires. The big video game companies are perhaps more timid when it comes to tackling the subject (except for Square Enix which goes there without any shame), but the interest is there. If there is one who does not hide his curiosity towards the practice, it is good Reggie Fils-Aimethe famous ex-president of Nintendo of America, who spoke about it during a panel at SXSW 2022.
Not you Reggie, not you
During this exchange, Reggie Fils-Aimé says he thinks blockchain technology could be implemented in video gamesif all this is done taking into account the point of view of a player or a player, and not for a studio or a publisher to make more money (naivete, when you hold us).
He then cites the example ofAnimal Crossingwhere blockchain could fit in well, especially when it comes to reselling islands:
« I am a blockchain supporter. I think blockchain as a technology is really compelling. I also believe in the concept of play-to-earn in video games. I say this as a gamer, where I may have invested 50 hours in a game, 100 hours in a game, where I have invested 300 hours… when I’m ready to move on, wouldn’t it be great to monetize what I’ve built? I bet I would have interested people here today if I wanted to sell my Animal Crossing island. I wish I could monetize this. Blockchain technology embedded in code and development would allow me to do this […] In the end, it must be good for the player, but I see an opportunity. »
For the moment, this opinion does not seem to be shared by his ex-employer, Nintendo, but for how long, difficult to say. One thing is certain, the subject will continue to divide throughout this year.
