Hibbert is considered one of Jamaica’s most influential musicians. In the early 1960s he formed the group The Maytals with Jerry Matthius and Raleigh Gordon, which was renamed Toots & The Maytals in the 1970s.
They made music that evolved from ska and rocksteady. When the group released the song “Do the raggay” in 1968, fans adopted that term to describe the new genre of music. “I am the one who invented the word reggae,” he said in an interview with the BBC.
