Reggae great Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry passed away

Lee Perry has been living in Jamaica since the beginning of this year after years of living in Switzerland. He produced a thousand recordings during his lifetime, including several of Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Garden tools as an instrument

“Scratch” left its own mark on music, especially in the 1970s. For example, he experimented with garden tools as instruments and used the sound of the smoke of a joint being blown out into the microphone.

He would have buried microphones under palm trees to get a certain sound. He also had music tapes rotated backwards for sound effects; something that is very common nowadays. His nickname, Scratch, comes from a dance: the chicken scratchdance from Mexico.
