Regent of Meranti Islands Arrested for Corruption by Indonesia’s KPK

Jakarta

KPK arrested Regent of the Meranti Islands, Muhammad Adil (MA), on suspicion of corruption. KPK deputy chairman Alexander Marwata explained the chronology of several parties being secured until he arrested Adil at the official residence.

Alexander initially said that the KPK had received reports from the public regarding alleged corruption cases in the Meranti Islands, Riau. The team immediately went down to Meranti as a follow-up.

“The KPK team received information that there was an MA order to collect deposit money from the SKPD head through the RP as the district head’s aide,” said Alexander in a press conference at the KPK building, Friday (7/4/2024).

Then, on Thursday (6/4), at around 21.00 WIB, the KPK arrested Fitria Nengsih (FN), who is the Head of BPKAD Meranti Regency Government, and Tarmizi (TM) as the Head of the General Section. The two people were also investigated by the KPK at the Meranti Police.

“From the results of inquiries from FN and TM, information was obtained that money had been handed over for MA needs which had been going on for a long time, reaching tens of billions,” he said.

Furthermore, the KPK coordinated with the Meranti Police and secured M Adil as the Regent of Meranti.

“The team in coordination with the Merangin Police immediately carried out security at the Regent’s official residence and the Supreme Court’s position at that time was in the official residence,” he said.

The KPK also arrested a number of parties suspected of knowing about the alleged corruption case. The Heads of Regional Work Units (SKPD) admitted that they had deposited money with Adil.

“Apart from that, they were also secured and inquiries were made to several SKPD heads and all of them explained that they had handed over the money to the Supreme Court through the FN,” he said.

The KPK also found a sum of money in the sting operation. The money was obtained by the KPK in Pekanbaru City.

“In the Pekanbaru area, the team secured the MFA and found Rp. 1 billion in cash which was the total money given by the Supreme Court for conditioning the financial audit of the Meranti Islands Pemkad,” said Alexander.

“The money that was found and secured in the act of catching hands as initial evidence amounted to around Rp. 1.7 billion,” he said.
