Authorities in the Chinese city of Hangzhou are cutting the ribbon on a huge block of flats for 20,000 people.
The mastodon is not a human anthill for the poor like other metropolises of the Celestial Empire and Hong Kong Autonomous Province. The residential building bears the name “Regent International Center” and is struggling to be worthy of this name. With over 6 thousand dwellings in it, the experimental building provides all necessary amenities to its residents. The complex was originally conceived as a luxury aparthotel. Opened about ten years ago, it did not manage to survive long as a hotel. The reason is that people are massively looking for permanent housing and bypassing the shiny skyscraper with modern architecture. The municipality decides to amend the project. The 2,206 apartments have been partitioned into several parts and their number has nearly tripled. The small rooms and small rooms are equipped with kitchenettes to turn them into independent households. The common areas have also been remodeled. The areas with restaurants and hairdressing salons have been significantly increased. Bank offices, a supermarket, a post office, a kindergarten and, expectedly, an organization of the Chinese Communist Party were opened.
The inside of the block is still shiny
The idea of a fully autonomous building was born during the strict coronavirus quarantines. At the moment, the building is not yet fully occupied – many of the apartments are waiting for their residents. The areas are leased for no less than ten years. Not all former hotel apartments are scaled down. A small number of apartments have not been touched – they are intended for elite tenants. Shops and restaurants are divided into categories. The publication “Onliner” warns that the shiny building still has the potential to resemble a miserable dormitory. Some of the low class accommodations are windowless. Whether the sewage system and the electricity network will withstand such an influx of people is also questionable.
