Regarding Security Issues, Apple Shuts Down the Beeper Mini Application for Android

JawaPos.com – Apple took quick action by shutting down the Beeper Mini app. It is known that Beeper Mini is a service that allows Android users to access and send iMessage, Apple’s instant messaging service.

This happened just a few days after Beeper launched its application on December 5. Beeper’s native app, now known as Beeper Cloud, works by routing iMessage messages through a remote Mac computer.

However, the Beeper Mini takes a different approach by connecting directly to Apple’s servers, and bypassing Beeper’s own servers. This process even eliminates the need for an Apple ID login in the app, offering a seamless iMessage experience for Android users.

It’s no surprise Apple isn’t happy. Citing potential security risks such as metadata exposure and spam, they have now shut down the Beeper Mini app for Android.

Apple confirmed the closure in a statement. According to him, Apple builds products and services with industry-leading privacy and security technologies designed to give users control over their data and keep personal information safe.

“We take steps to protect our users by blocking techniques that exploit forged credentials to gain access to iMessage. These techniques pose significant risks to user security and privacy, including potential metadata exposure and enabling unsolicited message attacks, spam , and phishing. We will continue to make updates in the future to protect our users,” Apple said regarding the shutdown.

Beeper, on the other hand, states that Beeper Mini is secure and offers better privacy than unencrypted SMS. The company even offered to share its entire source code with third parties for independent security evaluation.

While Beeper Cloud remains operational, Beeper Mini is currently inactive. Beeper has deregistered all Android phone numbers on behalf of its users and has extended the free trial period by another week to compensate for the downtime.

Apple has also announced plans to introduce further security measures in the upcoming iOS 17.2 update, including iMessage ignition verification.
