Recently, floods in the region of Western Lithuania have been intensifying, covering more and more new territories, which is why even four Municipalities – Klaipėda city, Klaipėda, Šilutė and Kretinga districts – unanimously agree that complex state support is needed to strengthen the existing flood infrastructure.
All municipalities emphasize that in the future, such floods as we saw at the end of the year will only increase, so the Ministry of the Environment should be guided by new scientific research and data when distributing funds for flood prevention.
A warming climate and the increasing threat of flooding require an urgent and effective response. It is important to plan and implement effective flood risk management measures for both flood prevention and response. This includes investment in infrastructure for flood prevention, as well as careful analysis of flood hazards and appropriate response procedures.
All these actions must be coordinated on a wider regional and national scale to ensure an effective flood risk management strategy. Only by working together and working together can we mitigate the effects of floods and protect people and infrastructure from these disasters.
“All four municipalities have prepared flood risk management measures, of course we will provide them to the Ministry of Environment, but at the same time we understand that we cannot think only about our own backyard. The issue of flood management must become a common vision of the entire Western Lithuania region. In a joint resolution with other municipalities, we will apply to the Ministries of Environment and Agriculture for a new flood management strategy and new funding. The existing plan does not correspond to today’s situation, therefore, in our opinion, it is necessary to conduct a flood risk management study of the entire region and only then select the necessary measures to control flood risks”, says Klaipėda District Mayor Bronius Markauskas.
In the Klaipėda district, the areas in the Priekule ward are the most affected by floods: the town of Priekule, the villages of Lankupii, Stragnai, Butkai, Šernai, Dituva. The overflowing of Minija, Danė, and Agluona rivers has a significant impact.
The risk of flooding would be reduced if the Dreverna and Brukšvai polder embankments, the Stragnai polder embankments and the pumping station, the embankment in Purmalai village were reconstructed, if a new pumping station was built in Purmalai village and the Baukštė polder pumping station was reconstructed. According to preliminary calculations, almost 7.3 million euros would be needed to complete all these works. In the national water area management plan, only 300 thousand is allocated for flood risk management measures for Klaipėda district. euros.
