Refurbishment of Royal Navy’s Nuclear Submarine HMS Vanguard by Babcock

The Royal Navy has scheduled refurbishment of the nuclear submarine HMS Vanguard (S28). This will be done by Babcock.

What is known

The company has signed a contract with the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA). The agreement provides for a major overhaul to ensure the operability of the nuclear submarine until the end of the remaining service life.

The work will take place at the British company’s facility in Plymouth. HMS Vanguard (S28) arrived at the repair site in June this year. The project will create approximately 1,000 jobs and provide Babcock with the workforce to continue supporting the Vanguard-class submarines.

HMS Vanguard (S28) was the first of four Vanguard-class nuclear submarines. They are the carriers of intercontinental ballistic missiles UGM-133A Trident II (up to 16 pieces) with nuclear warheads (up to 48 pieces) and a maximum launch range of approximately 7000-12000, depending on the load.

The submarine was launched in 1992 and handed over to the Royal Navy almost a year and a half later. In addition to HMS Vanguard (S28), the UK built three more submarines that became carriers of Trident II missiles: HMS Victorious, HMS Vigilant and HMS Vengeance. They have tail numbers S29, S30 and S31, respectively.

The service life of submarines is coming to an end. Starting next decade, the Royal Navy will use Dreadnought-class submarines that can also carry Trident II (D5) missiles.
