Refugees, online training courses to restore dignity and trust to those who have lost everything

ROMA – The 25 refugees from Burundi, Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan and currently hosted in Uganda, aged between 19 and 46 and with a professional training background in IT, have undertaken an online training course in software development that will allow them to acquire basic and advanced skills through the Java and SQL programming languages.

Civic-linguistic and professional training courses. Having passed a final test, they will arrive in Italy thanks to a work contract in the manufacturing sector.information technology. Civic-linguistic preparation and IT professional training courses have begun for refugees selected by “ReadyForIT – Labour Pathways for Refugees” program dedicated to the creation of Work Corridors for Refugees aimed at job placement in the IT sector, an innovative initiative aimed at offering professional development and integration opportunities to those who have been forced to flee their country.

To date, 120 million refugees in the world. To date, over 120 million people around the world have been forced to leave their homes due to conflict, persecution and human rights violations. Very often, in the country of first reception, refugees do not find opportunities to rebuild their lives with dignity and find themselves forced to migrate and face long and dangerous journeys. With the Work Corridors for Refugees, the opportunity is offered to refugee people, already in possession of certain professional skills, to enter with a work visa and stay in Italy to work.

Safe and regular routes. These safe and regular paths show how the private sector can play a fundamental role in providing concrete and effective opportunities for solidarity and protection. The “ReadyForIT – Labor Pathways for Refugees” project is conceived by Italian Accenture ETS Foundation and led by UNHCRUN Refugee Agency, together with the Foundation itself, Diaconia Valdese, Talent Beyond Boundaries, Pathways International, the International Trade Center – ITC (UN/WTO Technical Agency) and the Industrial Union of Turin, with the contribution of Reale Foundation and Conad ETS Foundation and in collaboration with Develhope, Refactory Uganda and Finn Church Aid. The first 25 refugees, selected in Uganda as the host country, began the 8-week online training course and coaching in the IT field foreseen by the project to consolidate their IT skills and to learn the Italian language, in order to start an effective path of inclusion in Italy.

Possible hires at the end of the training course. Once the training course is completed, passing a final test will allow them to be hired by the following companies: Accenture, Aubay, Btinkeeng, Gruppo SCAI, OverIT, Reale ITES and Valuetech. Italy is among the first countries in the world to develop a regular employment entry channel for refugees under the current job mobility framework. The selection and training of refugees is part of the so-called “extra quota” path recently introduced into Italian legislation, i.e. the possibility for Italian companies to select and hire refugees at the end of a training course carried out abroad. In addition to ReadyForIT and the arrivals from Uganda expected in the coming months, the selection and training of refugees in Egypt and Jordan will also be completed by the end of 2024 for subsequent inclusion in the naval and goldsmith sectors.

How to restore dignity and trust. The initiative recognizes the value of work and training as essential tools to restore dignity and confidence to those who have had to abandon everything. Through the Work Corridors for Refugees, we intend to encourage the meeting between the potential of skills and professionalism that refugees bring with them, with the need for workers of Italian companies, generating mutual benefit. In a historical phase in which the gap between job supply and demand is particularly critical, job mobility becomes a precious resource not only for people on the run, but also for companies looking for motivated and competent workers, and allows refugees to find a job in line with their aspirations, and build a dignified future.

The humanitarian corridors and beyond. “Italy is at the forefront in the development of regular entry channels – says Chiara Cardoletti, UNHCR representative for Italy, the Holy See and San Marino – after the successful experiences of humanitarian corridors, emergency evacuations and university corridors, the opening of work corridors for refugees represents a model in Europe and beyond. Collaboration between international and civil society organizations, together with state authorities and the private sector remains key to finding long-term solutions that allow refugees to use their skills and abilities for the benefit of all.”
