Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – After serious riots in the Freiburg state initial reception facility (LEA), the responsible regional council has switched on. “Due to the current incidents, it is currently being examined whether transfers to other state initial reception facilities will take place,” said a spokeswoman for the authority of the German Press Agency in Freiburg.
There were fights in the facility for asylum seekers and refugees on Sunday and Monday. According to the police, around 40 people attacked each other several times, some with poles, knives and other objects. At least eight people were injured. Nine suspects were provisionally arrested and, according to the police, were taken into custody. The regional council had already announced that such incidents were unacceptable.
According to the regional council, 740 refugees live in the Freiburg facility – there are a maximum of 1,200 places there. The people come from around 30 different countries, especially Afghanistan, Turkey, Syria, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, the authority said. During the night and on Tuesday it was quiet on the LEA site.
The investigations at the public prosecutor’s office are ongoing. In the case of a suspect, it is checked whether an arrest warrant can be issued in the so-called accelerated procedure, as the public prosecutor announced on request. It is about the allegation of dangerous bodily harm – the background is an alleged hit with a bottle.
The public prosecutor spoke of a large number of participants and a confusing factual and legal situation of the events. Extensive investigations should therefore clarify the circumstances and responsibilities of individual people.
According to its own statements, the regional council wants to hold a crisis talk with the police and public prosecutor’s office this week. Details on this initially remained open.
