the essentials in brief

  • Refugees from Ukraine are also admitted to federal asylum centers in Switzerland.
  • There they are supervised by security staff.

Hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing the war in Ukraine. Switzerland also makes its contribution and offers accommodation.

When the refugees arrive in Switzerland, they are distributed to the various federal asylum centers. One of them is in Zurich, on the Duttweiler site.

As an on-site inspection shows, security people are stationed around the area. “In each of our federal asylum centers there are security officers.” That says Daniel Bach, Head of Information and Communication at the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).

Various tasks of security for refugees from the Ukraine war

Your tasks are varied. “For example, to receive those who arrive or to ensure security within the federal asylum center.”

In addition, there is the task of ensuring that “no unauthorized persons go to the Federal Asylum Center”. Bach continues: “The asylum seekers are there because they claim persecution or threats and their identity must be protected.”

Refugees from the Ukraine war happy about security assistance

Bach denies that refugees could be unsettled or frightened by the uniformed security staff.

“We have no evidence that they act as a deterrent to displaced people from Ukraine. The security staff are not armed and are otherwise instructed to behave in a friendly manner.”

Many who arrive are happy if someone receives them and takes care of them.
