Actually, the hotel would only be used as a temporary emergency shelter for asylum seekers next week. But because of the cry for help from Ter Apel, this has now been brought forward.
The asylum seekers center in Ter Apel in Groningen is overcrowded. There are about 750 asylum seekers there, while the center is designed for 250 refugees. The cabinet has subsequently called on all provinces to realize one hundred extra places for refugees this weekend.
‘Toothed up’
Emmen has now made room for 150 refugees, all families. “After the call, we stepped up with the security region and the municipality to get everything ready,” says a spokesperson for the COA, the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers. “It’s still not quite finished, but we can improvise.”
Asylum seekers from, among others, the asylum seekers’ center in Zweeloo help to guide the families in the hotel. Other Drenthe municipalities are still looking for shelter places.
The hotel will serve as emergency shelter until January 8 at the latest. After that, care apartments should be built in the building.
