In an appeal to the Conference of Interior Ministers, which other organizations have also signed, it says: “Syria is a state of torture!” Resuming deportations would be a disastrous first step in the normalization of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. “Deportations to Syria cannot be justified, not even of criminals and those at risk!” The federal and state interior ministers want to discuss on Thursday in Berlin whether the general ban on deportation, which has been in force since 2012, expires at the end of the year.
The head of the Stuttgart office of the Baden-Württemberg Refugee Council, Seán McGinley, referred to statistics from the State Ministry of the Interior, according to which more than 51,000 asylum applications have been received from people from Syria since 2015. In his opinion, this includes the vast majority of Syrian refugees. In addition, there are those who came with admission programs or as a family reunification and did not apply for asylum, he said on Thursday. “But that will only be relatively few.” But not all of them would be directly threatened with deportation.
