According to him, changes in the Ministry of Defense will be noticeable more and more often. Now clearing the system of unscrupulous participants is one of the department’s priorities. They are working on this together with law enforcement agencies.
Umerov emphasized that the internal audit of the Ministry of Defense and the updated General Inspectorate of the Ministry of Defense were fully operational.
“They have already discovered many violations – over the last 4 months, more than 10 billion violations committed earlier. We react harshly to all cases. We work closely with law enforcement officers and special services,” added the head of the Ministry of Defense.
He recalled that in December the SBU, together with the Ministry of Defense, liquidated a scheme for the purchase of ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine for almost one and a half billion hryvnia.
“This is something we can talk about publicly. More news to come“, Umerov promised.
The department is also working on a systematic solution to the problem – by introducing procurement according to NATO standards. This is done taking into account not to harm the continuous supply of weapons and logistics equipment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The minister recalled that the work of the first special agency, the “State Logistics Operator,” was recently presented, which will purchase logistics equipment, in particular food, clothing, and fuel. There is also a personnel reboot at the Defense Procurement Agency; it specializes in the purchase of weapons.
“There are already concrete results. In four months, we managed to save approximately UAH 3.5 billion on all logistics purchases. This is approximately 20% of the planned purchase amount,” Umerov said.
In addition, for the first time, the Ministry of Defense purchased 50 thousand sets of women’s uniforms, 100 thousand electric heating pads, 15 thousand active headphones. We managed to save UAH 11.7 million on the supply of headphones.
Scandals in the Ministry of Defense
Let us remember that last year there were several high-profile scandals that concerned the purchase of products for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In particular, it was discovered that food for the military was purchased at an inflated price.
Also, the Ministry of Defense recently liquidated a scheme for the purchase of artillery shells for the Armed Forces of Ukraine for almost 1.5 billion hryvnia.
The head of one of the Main Directorates of the Ministry of Defense was probably involved in organizing the scheme.
